Questions

Which formatting survives copy and paste?

It depends on the Telegram app you paste into.

  • Telegram Desktop and Android read the HTML formatting you copy: bold, italic, underline, strikethrough, quotes, links and code blocks. Support for spoilers and monospace depends on the app version.
  • iPhone keeps bold, italic, underline and strikethrough. Spoilers, monospace, links and quotes do not paste.
  • The Mac app turns the signs ** __ ~~ || ` into bold, italic, strikethrough, spoiler and monospace when you send. Underline, links and quotes do not come through a paste. The editor copies those signs for you.
  • Dates do not paste in any app. To publish a date, copy the post as HTML or MarkdownV2 and send it with a bot.

When a mark does not paste, copy the post from the Format menu as text with markers, or as HTML for a bot. Telegram Desktop also drops a mark that covers the whole pasted text. If your whole post is bold, press bold again in Telegram.

What are the length limits?

A text post holds up to 4096 characters. A caption under a photo or video holds up to 1024, and up to 4096 with Telegram Premium.

Formatting marks do not count, only visible characters do. Telegram counts in UTF-16 units: an emoji counts as 2, and some emoji sequences count more. Use the Limit switch above the editor to choose Post or With media.

How do I add a date that shows in each reader's time zone?

Press More, then Date and time. Pick the date, the time and your time zone, then choose how readers see it.

Each reader sees the moment in their own time zone. The format can be a short date, a long time, a weekday or a relative phrase such as “in 3 days”. Older Telegram apps show the date as the text you typed. Telegram accepts dates up to 3 years ahead.

Should I copy HTML or MarkdownV2?

Copy HTML when you can. It only needs three signs escaped: the less-than, greater-than and ampersand signs.

MarkdownV2 needs a backslash before many signs, such as dots, dashes and brackets. Copy it only when your tool asks for MarkdownV2. Copy JSON entities when a script wants the text and the list of marks apart.

How do quotes work?

A quote sets off a passage in the post. A collapsible quote usually shows its first lines, and readers tap to open the rest.

Use a collapsible quote for long details. A quote cannot sit inside another quote.

What is a spoiler for?

A spoiler hides text behind animated dots until a reader taps it. Use it for answers, promo codes and plot twists.

Spoilers cannot go inside code.

How do I format code in a post?

Use monospace for a few words inside a line, such as a command. Use a code block for several lines.

Give a code block a language name, such as python, and Telegram colors the code. Code does not combine with other marks like bold.
